Dr. L. Ray Matthews Vitamin D3 and COVID
An accomplished mainstream trauma surgeon being ridiculed by his peers for expressing a new health notion is rare. Rarely does a doctor who receives such a response admit to laughing and even smiling. The Surgical Critical Care Director at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. L. Ray Matthews, would eventually win over other surgeons who were suspicious of his cutting-edge ideas.
What was this bold concept that prompted so much skepticism? Dr. Matthews believed in the therapeutic properties of vitamin D.
A lot of people ask Dr. Matthews how a surgeon may get involved in vitamin D research. “As a surgeon, I’m really interested in wound infections and getting patients off ventilators,” he said. I want to help my patients recuperate faster and reduce pneumonia. “I want my patients healthy and out of the hospital as soon as possible.”
Dr. Matthews’ work with vitamin D stems from his childhood aspiration to be a doctor.
Vitamin D has a powerful effect.
Dr. Matthews and a team of Morehouse surgeons published a groundbreaking report in the American Journal of Surgery last summer on the effects of vitamin D in critically ill patients.
1)Their research used vitamin D, omega 3-fatty acids, glutamine and progesterone to treat individuals suffering from concussions and traumatic brain injuries.
Dr. Matthews is now working on a publication on vitamin D’s role in reducing the occurrence of congestive heart failure, a costly condition to treat due to high readmission rates.
Dr. Matthews claims that vitamin D can reduce 30-day readmission rates by half. “Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption, which increases heart contractility. (2) Calcium improves cardiac contraction.” (3)
The CMSA believes lowering hospital readmission rates is a critical concern.
Vitamin D Deficiency Defined
Vitamin D is a steroid hormone that directly affects over 200 human protein-coding genes, including those linked to autoimmune illness and cancer.
(4-6) “Optimal health, athletic performance, and cognitive function require appropriate vitamin D levels. According to Dr. Matthews, vitamin D is a very potent molecule.
He strongly advises people to get their vitamin D levels checked often, pointing out that the government’s current permitted threshold of 30 ng/mL is considered too low.
(7) “I prefer 50-55 ng/mL,” he explains. “In the wild, all animals are between 50 and 55 ng/mL, but in confinement, they plummet. Humans are not immune to this. In the first 48 hours of being in an ICU or another hospital ward, your vitamin D level declines by half. Slight drops in blood sugar (e.g., from 30 to 18 ng/mL) increase the chance of death. It is a major issue.”
Dr. Matthews has taken it upon himself to educate policymakers on the science and usefulness of vitamin D. He also expects insurance companies will eventually recognize the vitamin’s value in preventing chronic injuries that bother otherwise healthy people.
A lot of government officials don’t know what vitamin D can accomplish, adds Matthews. “I’ve been lecturing them. You need a passion for it. Most people believe me after they see the proof. For example, our new vitamin D protocol has reduced the mortality rate of severely ill patients by 42%.”
Dr. Matthews couldn’t just come into his hospital and tell everyone to take vitamin D. It required a lot of persuasion, starting with the staff nutritionist.
“I showed the dietitian our patients’ vitamin D levels as they were admitted,” he says. “I’d request the test immediately away and show the dietitian when it came back. We had very low levels. The average hydroxyvitamin D level in Grady’s ICU was 15 ng/mL, which is extremely low. But we’d see single digits. Four. Six. “I asked the dietitians, ‘Why aren’t you examining vitamin D levels?’”
In less than ten months, pharmaceutical companies developed coronavirus vaccinations. Because the number of COVID-19 infections and deaths is increasing every day, all states are now responsible for getting vaccination doses into millions of people’s hands.
Despite all the politicians and doctors urging people to get the COVID-19 vaccine, one doctor has indicated he won’t get it. Retired trauma/critical care surgeon L. Ray Matthews directs Surgical Critical Care at Atlanta’s Morehouse School of Medicine.
First, vitamin D3 is a hormone that regulates 3,000 of 30,000 human genes (10% of our DNA). Vitamin D3 modulates our immunological and inflammatory systems. Vitamin D3 boosts white blood cell counts (B-cells, T-cells, monocytes) to help fight bacterial, fungal, viral, and cancerous illnesses. To combat the cytokine storm caused by coronavirus infections, the inflammatory response system decreases IL-6, TNF, and C-Reactive Protein (CRP).
Vitamin D3 affects the immune system and a large chunk of our DNA. Insufficient vitamin D3 consumption is caused by poor diet and lack of supplementation.
Most Black and Brown people believe their melanin protects them from needing to take adequate vitamin D3. Is it so?
Melanin is a natural sunblock. Melanin obstructs 95%t of vitamin D3 As a result, persons of color have lower vitamin D3 levels than lighter-skinned people. This makes persons of color more prone to coronavirus, heart disease, strokes, greater maternal/fetal mortality, cancer, and other chronic disorders.
Vitamin D3 supplementation varies depending on lifestyle and location. People who spend more time indoors or live in colder, less sunny locations may require less supplementation.
Vitamin D3 poisoning is rare. A person will need to ingest over a million IUs in a short time. The deficit is more hazardous than poison. Vitamin D3 levels below 18 ng/ml increase the risk of death from all causes, including coronavirus.
Lack of vitamin D3, lack of physical exercise, inadequate supplementation, and malnutrition have all contributed to the coronavirus’s adverse effects on African-Americans’ health. However, many African-Americans distrust government-sponsored medical demands and avoid immunizations.
Many African-Americans will not take the COVID-19 vaccine! You can see their hesitation. Do you and your family and friends intend to get the vaccine?
MATTHEWS: The immunizations I received during my 31-year medical career. Prior to the mRNA corona-virus vaccines, it took 5-20 years to create a vaccine. The mRNA vaccines’ long-term consequences are uncertain. For now, I’ll remain with D3.
Vitamin D3 levels decline as we get older, making it no surprise that African-Americans are more vulnerable to the coronavirus. This is because they are less active, supplement less and eat a diet that is undernourished. For this reason, many African-Americans avoid getting immunizations because they are wary of government-sponsored healthcare requirements.
Why do health authorities (like those on the president’s health council) rarely discuss preventative maintenance? Is it more about selling a vaccination than the benefits of taking less expensive supplements?
Less time spent unwell and less money spent on aftercare could help people improve their immune systems and lower the risk of viral infections. What does an ounce of prevention look like when it comes to immunity? What ‘old dependable’ goods do you recommend everyone keep on hand?
MATTHEWS: A global expert virologist once stated that 1,400 viruses have pandemic potential. Do you get 1,400 shots a year or do you build up your immune system to fight off infections? I’d suggest D3, zinc, and C. These are safe natural vitamins. During my 31-year medical career, I worked with some of the most contagious infectious diseases on the planet.
Most Black guys don’t practice preventative healthcare. They avoid healthcare visits and rarely take supplements. They spend more time on their appearance – at gyms – than on their interior systems. How can we fix that?
Generally speaking, women are more health-conscious than males, but there are exceptions. Getting their female family members to take a more active role in their male family members’ health is a must. Men tend to pay attention to what they have to say.
Building an immune system can help people avoid viral illnesses and save time and money in the long run, as the saying ‘a pound of prevention is worth an ounce of cure’ suggests. In terms of developing one’s immune system, what is your “ounce of prevention”? What are some of your favorite “old trusty” goods that you recommend people keep on hand?
Preventative healthcare is not a priority for most Black males. They avoid going to the doctor, and they don’t take any vitamins or supplements. They devote more effort to maintaining their physical appearance – such as going to the gym – than they do to taking care of the inside systems of their bodies.
“The coronavirus epidemic could be under control worldwide in three months if given the opportunity,” says Dr. Matthews. “My knowledge of coronavirus biology, pathophysiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology Vitamin D3 is God’s miracle vitamin, according to me”.
